My Little Fish Died :..(

It's silly that I'm crying over a little fish, but I had him for almost 2 years. I've been laying low the past few days because I didn't want to be on the computer near his bowl.I was too sad.:(
He took sick about 3 days ago. I hope it was just old age. I was starting to think about euthanising him, which I didn't want to do. But he was still taking a little food right up to the end, and also he seemed to be unconscious most of the past 3 days.
He was my little morning cheer boy. First thing every morning when I would drag my sleepy self into the kitchen, he would see me and get all excited and "dance" for me.
I would feed him right away, even before making coffee.
I will say that Beta's hands down are the most expressive and full of personality for their size. Of all the small fish, they are the best if you want a pet that requires little care and no aquarium setup. Except that it obviously hurts when they die, and they don't really live so long. For a beta, he was a senior citizen. I've heard that they don't live more than a year normally. So at almost 2 years, he had a good long life. I'm glad that I was able to get him to take food even towards the end.
So that is what I've awakened to this morning. He died sometime in the night, he just slipped away. So I guess I should comfort myself with these thoughts.
*note* If you don't know how to euthanise a fish that you know is suffering and isn't going to make it, it's ice water. Really icy cold water. Put them in a cup of ice water. It's humane and quick. My ex, who always had more compassion for animals and fish than he did for human beings, taught me this. It apparently deadens any nerves, sensations of pain that they might be feeling at the same time as killing them.
Anyway, I'm glad I didn't have to do it. R.I.P. little Beta-boy.:(

*note* If you live in San Diego and have an aquarium, be careful! They changed the tap-water recently, added far more chlorine to it. I can;'t specifically blame it on the death of my little beta, but it will kill your fish if you change their water without checking out what to do about it. Pisses me off that they didn't mail us anything! No warning! They add far more chlorine to the water and don't tell us! It literally smells like bleach when I run water from the faucet!!
Watch out people in San diego!

Sorry to here about the death of beta. Hope you're able to give her a good seeing off. When my goldfish, Jesus, died a few years ago I took him to the river along with a few friends, we sang songs said a few words and threw him in, it wasn't quite as idylic as it sounds though cause he got caught on celophane he was wrapped in and landed on my foot, this made me scream and move and loose him, after much searching he was found though and eventually was layed to rest in the river. We then all went for fish and chips in memory of him.

Oh, Lisa!! I'm so sorry!! Poor little Beta! :( I know that no matter how small, pets always have a special place in our hearts. That is so sweet that he would see you in the morning and do a little dance for you! May you have great memories of Beta and be comforted by the fact that you got more time with him than most Beta owners if he lived a year after the regular expectancy. He must have been spoiled and treated right to stick around so long! :)

Nabonidus,
Thanks for the feedback on the piece Ticharu, Jack and I are developing. Jack's lyrics/story fits the music idea perfectly. I think you'll really enjoy the final product.

Next time around you need to work with us. It's pretty cool.

Now is not the time to talk about ice fishing... no, didn't think so...

I'm constantly amazed by animals and how smart even ones with tiny brains are. I get attached to them very quickly myself.

Hey, if you need help figuring out the links thing, I'd be happy to talk you through it. At least the part I understand.

Lisa,
I'm sorry to hear about your little Beta:(
There is stuff you can buy called Chlor Out at any store that sells aquarium products. It makes the water safe for the fish instantly.
Just a thought.
I have the same problem with bleach smelling water. Nasty!

Hope your heart feels better.

Aww, Lisa, I'm sorry about Beta. I think animals are one of the best things you can have in your life, and to see them suffer and then leave you is always hard.

Take care,

Thanks Belinda!
I'm glad you understand this! I did use de-chlor, of course, but it really is such a shock to fish when the water is changed in any way. I used extra de-chlor, in fact. I even went to the store and got bottled water, and then couldn't bring myself to use it - then I was afraid it would further shock him. Did a gradual water change but it was too late.:(
