Don't know if you've heard of this fraud, but he is very funny to me. He didn't just tell a few little embellishments, his whole schtick is falling apart. It's always the most pathetic of compulsive liars that tell stories to make themselves look good. It's not enough to merely be a liar. I remember there was an American war hero ( he claimed) author awhile back who was found to be a total fraud.Scumbag. Never even was in the military. Really, these publishing companies should do their homework when it comes to certain kinds of non-fiction. But in this case it's particularly funny because James Frey lied to say that he was a scumbag!

As a former bookseller (Oprah's book club and other stuff drove me out,i'm laughing over this. al I can think of is that line in The Magificent Ambersons- "got his comeuppance, tenfold". Bwahhhhhhah!

There's that old idea of the romantic villain, the attraction of a bad guy. Maybe he was going for that :-) Kind of funny that he manages to fool people like Oprah!
I guess for some people there's always the temptation if fame and fortune are concerned, to cut corners a bit, take a fast way instead of working your way there. This is known in the science world. Some time ago this Korean scientist got caught after it was found out that he had fabricated the results of his research. In 2004 he claimed to have cloned the first human embryos and to have extracted stem cells from them. This was greeted as a major scientific breakthrough since stem cell research is hoped to provide cures for major diseases in some future time. One has to wonder why an established and esteemed scientist falls into this...
Wow! I had no idea. I've heard loads about this book and almost bought it, actually. If I had, I would have been angry with myself now. *L* What a liar - I would think it must be hard to be consistent with your lies in the public for so long, but I guess he just keeps telling the same story he has arranged for himself.
God, I worked with a pathological liar one time and he did the same thing - made up stories about himself to make himself look more interesting/desirable. I have absolutely no sympathy for those types of people!
I wonder what Oprah's comment to this will be!

Hey, I'm of the "It's MY story and I can tell it any way I want!" school-of-thought. So maybe he shouldn't have published it as non-fiction. Just a memoir.

Yep, I agree Amber, I would have had absolutely no problem with this guy if he'd published it under fiction, or used the phrase "loosely based on".
And Gina, that's what I hear, that he's actually a good writer. But wow,
