Heart...

Listening to Magic Man right now. Wow, I'd forgotten what a powerful song that is!
I should've added an album or two when I made that list of favorite albums awhile back.
Actually, Nancy Wilson is one of the few female guitarists that I really admire. Listen to the intro to "Crazy on You" if you don't know who or what I'm talking about.
The sad thing about Heart, they really went downhill after, say, "Bebe La Strange" in 1979 or 1980. In my opinion, of course. But I'm not alone.

And I'd completely written them off until just the other day. Heard Magic Man, part of it, on blaring from someone's radio. So I just downloaded a few things that I remember liking, "Straight on for you" "Magic Man", "Little Queen" "Barracuda". Etc.
And they rocked! I'm sure they still are capable, especially now that they've dropped the pop-schlock stuff they were doing in the 80's.
I remember one hilarious song, let's see...
"All I wanna do is make love to you." I think it was called. Had to do with a woman who is driving, picks up a hot young studly hitchhiker heheh, boinks him in a hotel, and later gives birth to a love child. We used to laugh and make fun watching that video on MTV.
It was such a soap opera.
But also it was embarrassing to watch once killer rockers like the Wilson sisters
look so uncomfortable and out of their element, overly made up hair and makeup, crammed into spandex and corsets. And yet I think the song/video was a hit to the masses. Go figure.
But itwas the time of the power ballad, after all.

Anyway, try downloading some old ancient Heart like "Magic Man" or "Straight On for you" or "Little Queen" or "Crazy On You" "Barracuda" if you've never heard them and are curious.
They influenced a lot of female rockers that came later, but haven't quite gotten the recognition they deserve ( probably due to the critics and that later crap).

Hello Lisa!

This is an excellent introduction. I'm completely ignorant of Heart. You know how it is: I'm fairly young (as regards rock history) and got into rock'n'roll fairly late, so there's a whole lot of going back in history for me. I've got to download some of those songs. Interesting how they changed in the 80's. I expect it was the record company forcing them into a particular format, you know, getting an up-and-coming act and wanting to make them into a product.

Hey, you are right about what happened to them, Maria! I saw them on a Behind the Music talking about that time, and they were indeed uncomfortable and unhappy in that role. And it was forced upon them.

But also, yep, you really should check out Magic Man, they ruled the world with that song in 1976. It's a classic.
Here's the lyrics:
Cold late night so long ago
When I was not so strong you know
A pretty man came to me
Never seen eyes so blue
I could not run away
It seemed we'd seen each other in a dream
It seemed like he knew me
He looked right through me
Come on home, girl he said with a smile
You dont have to love me yet
Let's get high awhile
But try to understand
Try to understand
Try try try to understand
Im a magic man.

Winter nights we sang in tune
Played inside the months of moon
Never think of never
Let this spell last forever
Summer over passed to fall
Tried to realize it all
Mama says shes worried
Growing up in a hurry

"Come on home, girl!" mama cried on the phone
"Too soon to lose my baby yet my girl should be at home!"
But try to understand, try to understand
Try try try to understand
Hes a magic man, mama
Hes a magic man

Come on home, girl he said with a smile
I cast my spell of love on you a woman from a child!
But try to understand, try to understand
I'm a magic man!

Oh man such great memories flood back when I hear Heart. They were amazing, weren't they?
I think it would be near impossible to sustain the magic from the early (Dreamboat Annie) years.
They called themselves "Little Led Zeppelin." Yup. :)

OH MY GOSH LISA,

it took me so long to get back to you its crazy!!! sorry. I was on a small trip to my dads place but I did read your advice to me on a video to OO-TV. Anne-Marie gave me the advice to do a video of my trip to London and I think I may just do that but at the smae time combine the video with my previous "walkin on the grid" and "tribute video".

For a while I was waiting to hear back from Tracie on the copyright rules and whatnot since some of my material contains eelpie stuff. I did recieve the OK from matt kent a while ago as long as I noted that sources were copyright eel pie but I dont want to work really hard ona video and be dissqualified the moment I sent it in. That being said I missed the deadline but I never heard back from tracie... ? hmmm.. maybe ill leave the question on rachels blog or something..

thanks again for the advice

Hi Lisa!

Heart...I had heard "Never" and "These Dreams" on FEN(Far East Network) Radio program "American Top 40" during 80's.
They were powerful rock'n roll.
But I never heard "old ancient Heart" I'll try some as you recommend. Thanks for your advice.
Your knowledge of music is very profound.Really interesting ♪

My wisdom tooth were pulled yesterday. Not so much pain..
The dentist asked me
"Would you like to take the tooth as your memorial with you?"
I said "NOOOOOOOOO!Thanks" lol.
Thanks for caring me.I'm fine now.

Lots of love and thanks

Hey Sue, I remember hearing that! Their being called Little Led Zep. :)
Which leads me to Dan L : I think that's why she played a Gibson SG, as a matter of fact. Jimmy Page played one.And we know the Wilson sisters were huge LZ fans. :)

Hi Paul B! Don't worry about it, I knew you were gone on a trip - I'd read that at your blog. :)
I think you should send something in, anyway. Better to try than not.
Regardless of the outcome. :)

And hi Blue! Glad you got that tooth yanked, it was a necessary evil. Hope the healing is fast!
Thanks you guys!

Catching up a little too!
Nick Drake was wonderful and such a tragic story, like Joy Divisionm people should've seen it coming but what can you do? Hindsight.
Heart just got played to death for me, ruined by the 'classic rock' station KQRS in the twin cities. Their playlist was about one inch deep and it was the station everyone played at work (various jobs) so I couldn't get away from it. Ruined some perfectly good music.

Heart is one of those bands that everytime I hear their early stuff I think, "that was a good rock band." I've never owned one of their records but always enjoyed their music pre-80's hairband craze days.

Hi'ya,

I have a neat memory around Magic Man. Mostly etheral in quality--Impala car windows down; spring Saturday afternoon; my mother driving and my sister in the front passenger seat; me jamming in the back and wondering whether they could "really hear".

That's what I remember most. Could they really hear the lyrics. Nice.

I've been wondering about the steve miller band lately. I'm so darn busy though. Glad I stopped over. Neat memory, so thanks x 25!

Oh yes! Heart is a group I wanted to make sure my son knew of. He's got Dreamboat Annie in his room right now and loves it but Crazy on You is his fav - that whole CD is magical!

Hi lovely how ya been?

I agree, HEART has NEVER been given the credit they are due. I think the Mtv stuff was a reaction to AOR radio dying. College radio would have been to winpy at the time for them and there was no Indie scene.
Even with Mtv stuff they still are unequaled. and Geldof called The Material Mange the 'Queen Bee of rock N Roll'
Fuck that shit.

Hi Lisa,
I was a huge Heart fan in the late 70s, when I wanted to write songs and be a rocker. My favourite sonf on Dreamboat Annie is "How Deep It Goes"- lovely vocal. I also remember the Dog & Butterfly record- with the hard side (dog) and soft (butterfly). Oh, the days of album concepts...

Cheers,
AM

Hi Lisa,
I think that there are a lot more female guitarists out there who are very good, they just don't get as much attention as the men. That song magic man is good, but the radio stations play it so much that I get sick of hearing it.
I hope one day female artists will be credited for their ability to play rather than for just looking pretty.
